Totally last-minute drawing for the Warchicks weekly art challenge. This week's theme was "The Soldier's Life." At first this theme didn't inspire me at all, but then I thought about my draenei paladin - Narcissa Calienne. Backstory time~
Following in the footsteps of her warrior father, she's fought alongside the humans most of her life. At first more of a representative of the draenei-human alliance, over time she developed a deep loyalty to Stormwind. Eventually becoming a knight of the Stormwind militia, she fights with a no-nonsense, dutiful personality, valuing honor and nobility. Her entire life devoted to defending the alliance, she always wears her armor, very rarely taking off her helm.
So, although it was difficult to pick a specific scene to draw, I decided to simply draw her looking over the city - as she herself represents a soldier's life to me. So focused on her duties, she forgets that beneath the serious mask and all that armor, she's still a beautiful girl. /sap
About the drawing itself: at first the time limit was very daunting. I always take very long on pictures, so I decided to try finishing this as fast as I could to hopefully work on that. I took the time limit as optional, but as a guideline to try to keep it simple and a bit more sketchy than I'm used to.
I love the colors you used in her body. : 3 White can be difficult for me to use at times but the purples and greys that you added for the shadows really make her shimmer and stand out. : D
Thanks~ When I use white I try to use something barely off-white as the base so I can still do highlights, and try to pick a color to gradually lean towards with the shading.
I'm usually more of a horde chick but I really love the way you did this piece. I think you did really well considering the time restriction. You still manage to have some great depth and shading I am sure if you practice speed sketching and drawing you will only get better!
